Why doctors need hands-on practice before they begin clinical practice
Primary healthcare is key to reaching the majority population in any country. In a country as heavily populated as India, trained physicians are required to manage the maximum cases with the highest efficiency. Hence, doctors should have adequate hands-on experience before they start a private clinical practice. Here’s why:
- A good doctor is first and foremost a good communicator. In order to communicate with one’s patient efficiently, a doctor should have prior experience in talking effectively to patients.
- A physician’s primary job is to provide accurate diagnosis. Without practice, even a highly qualified doctor may make mistakes like a novice.
- While a private clinic isn’t as stressful an environment as a hospital, worried family members of sick patients aren’t the easiest people to console and reason with. Prior experience as well as specialized training can help here.
- Any legally certified clinic follows standard guidelines that every healthcare professional working there must meet. Many guidelines include skills and work experience that can only come with hands-on practice.
In the words of Martin H Fischer, Observation, Reason, Human Understanding, Courage: these make the physician. And observe and reason you must. It is with sheer experience and learning that one becomes a physician. But to become a great one requires utmost patience and the courage to accept that you do not know everything.
